Novel chance to get in conversation with Mark Gatiss

01 October 2014

Actor, writer and novelist Mark Gatiss will be touching down in Darlington in December for an exclusive ‘in conversation’ event for charity.

Mark, who has written and acted in Doctor Who, Sherlock and The League of Gentleman and starred in Game of Thrones, will be chatting to an audience at Carmel College on 5 December.

Presented by the Mayor of Darlington in aid of the Mayor’s charities and in association with Teesside University, tickets are now on sale for £12.50 available from Darlington Civic Theatre box office.

Mark, who has become a familiar face from his role as Sherlock’s brother, Mycroft Holmes, and as Tycho Nestoris an envoy from the Iron Bank of Braavos in the fourth and fifth seasons of Game of Thrones, is originally from Sedgefield and grew up opposite Winterton psychiatric hospital where his father worked.

A former pupil of Heighington Church of England Primary School and Woodham Comprehensive in Newton Aycliffe, Gatiss shot to fame with cult series The League of Gentlemen which first aired in 1999 and for which he won a British Academy Television Award, a Royal Television Society Award and the prestigious Golden Rose of Montreux.

In recent years Mark has also had a number of stage roles including Menenius, a Senator of Rome in a production of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus – he was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

Darlington Mayor Councillor Gerald Lee said: 'I am delighted to welcome Mark back to his home region and that he has agreed to what will be a very special event. Mark has been involved in some of the most popular television shows of our time and this is a fantastic opportunity to hear him talk about his work and ask him questions as well as raise some money for charity.'

Professor Gerda Roper, Dean of Teesside University’s School of Arts & Media, added: 'This region has created an enormous amount of talent and it is always lovely to be able to welcome back someone who is a success and has had a major impact on popular culture. This will be a very special opportunity to hear Mark talk about his life and career.'

Northern Echo Editor Peter Barron MBE will be hosting the event and the proceeds will go to Butterwick Hospice Children’s Unit and Phoenix House Recovery Unit.
