Volunteers can sign up at Criminal Justice event

10 October 2014

Students and Teesside residents are being offered a chance to take on one of a number of coveted roles as a volunteer within the Criminal Justice System.

The Criminal Justice Volunteer Fair, to be held at Teesside University from 10.00am to 3.00pm on Tuesday 4 November, will provide an opportunity to explore opportunities and gather information about what it takes to become a volunteer and change lives.

The event, championed by Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger, follows the success of last year’s fair which attracted over 1,000 local people and students.

This year's event is set to be bigger and better with the PCC encouraging more organisations to get involved. Charities such as The Children’s Society, A Way Out and Barnardo’s will join others such as Victim Support, Cleveland Police and My Sister’s Place.

The day will showcase how volunteers already make an impact in the Criminal Justice System and how others can become actively involved, from providing support to victims of crime and their families, to facilitating restorative justice conferences.

The event is open to both students and members of the public over the age of 18 and will allow them to speak directly to representatives from the Criminal Justice organisations.

Barry Coppinger, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland, said: 'Last year's event was a huge success in bringing Criminal Justice organisations together under one roof. The passion and enthusiasm shown from those who attended was outstanding.

'This year's event will again emphasise the importance of volunteers and the skills they bring to the many differing roles that will be on offer and I'm really pleased to be spearheading it together with Teesside University.

'Volunteering is a great way to enhance a CV and gain valuable experience for the future. I would urge anyone who has an interest in volunteering or the Criminal Justice System to attend on 4 November to find out more.'

Jayne Golden, Volunteer Co-ordinator at Teesside University said: 'Teesside University is delighted to support and host the PCC Criminal Justice Fair. The organisations attending provide volunteers with a wide range of opportunities which help make a difference to the lives of local people and the local community.' The event takes place in the Clarendon Building at the University. For more information click this link or call 01642 301208.
