Celebrating academic achievement at Teesside University

Around 4,000 graduates will gather at Middlesbrough Town Hall to celebrate Teesside University’s annual academic awards ceremonies taking place from Monday 24 November to Tuesday 2 December.

A total of 13 ceremonies will be held over seven days, with awards ranging from foundation degrees to undergraduate degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates.

An academic procession will set off from the University gates at the Constantine Building at 10am on Monday 24 November, taking in a route along Albert Road to the Town Hall.

Honorary degrees will also be awarded to nine leading individuals during the academic awards, including Middlesbrough born Bob Mortimer, who worked as a solicitor before moving into comedy in the late 1980s.

Also being honoured this year: • Sandy Anderson OBE DL FREng, FIChemE, former chair of Teesside University Board of Governors • Professor James Caldwell DSc, leading global mathematician • Alan Ransome OBE, English table tennis European champion • Alison Thain OBE FCIH, Group Chief Executive of housing association Thirteen • Judge Gillian Matthews QC, Distinguished judge sitting on the Teesside Bench • Richard Barker, Chairman of Barker and Stonehouse • William Tillyer, world-renowned artist • David Muckle DSc, orthopaedic surgeon.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Henderson CBE DL, speaking ahead of his final Teesside University academic awards before his retirement next summer, said: 'Our graduates have worked hard to achieve their success and deserve the opportunity which these ceremonies give them to celebrate their achievements.

'I am very much looking forward to congratulating them and paying tribute to their families, partners and friends for all of the vital support they will have offered to our graduates while they were studying with us.'

The ceremonies will be shown on the Big Screen in Middlesbrough’s Centre Square, televised in the Students’ Union and streamed to the University’s website.
