Graduate Joe making the headlines

28 November 2014

Joe Hudson is making headlines after securing a communications role with a local authority.

Joe, who is graduating from the BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism Professional Practice, is now working in the communication department at Redcar & Cleveland Council.

His main responsibilities include dealing with the press and helping promote events being held within the borough.

Joe, 21, of Middlesbrough, said: 'I had always heard good things about Teesside and the investment being made into media facilities and I knew that using the latest technology would be of great benefit when moving into the work place.

'I chose the course because it was accredited with the NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists), which meant what was being taught during the course would really be of use at the end of the three years.

'Also, being originally from the Teesside area definitely came in useful when trying to source stories for my portfolio of degree course work.

'I really enjoyed the course, especially the ability to be able to go out and gain hands-on experience during the course. It really helps you to see what you have been taught in lectures by being able to actually go out and apply it to a real world situation.

'The course has given me a lot of practical experience, especially during the public relations module, where I worked as part of a group to launch and promote a campaign.'

During his degree Joe completed work experience at regional newspapers including The Northern Echo, The Gazette and Whitby Gazette.

He said: 'I was involved in helping other reporters in the newsroom by sourcing stories for the paper, getting involved in doing vox-pops and helping to ensure the newspaper was prepared on time for the deadline.

'I would definitely say to anybody thinking of studying at Teesside to do it. Many employers in my experience are always pleasantly surprised with the amount of different software programs we use, as well as all the cameras and other technology, which helps graduates from Teesside to easily slot into their workplace without lots of additional training.'
