Media representatives share their expertise with students

09 December 2014

Media professionals shared their experiences with students interested in working in the industry during a special Teesside University event.

Mind the Gap – Get Ahead, aimed at students interested in careers in public relations, digital media, journalism, film and broadcasting, involved a variety of practical workshops, informal talks and presentations.

Organised by the University’s School of Arts & Media, the event also offered students an opportunity to network and find out more about work placements in media industries.

Mark Handscomb, Senior Lecturer in Journalism, said: 'Our aim is to encourage ambition in our students and help to raise aspirations.'

Phil Roberts, Head of BBC North East and Cumbria, who was among speakers at the event, said: 'It's really important for students to establish connections in the industry, especially when seeking work placements and this event provides a great opportunity for networking.

'I've been having some great conversations with students and it’s great to see so many of them networking, as it’s a key skill.'

Also speaking at the event was final year BA (Hons) Journalism student Lucy Moody, who shared her own experiences on work placement with the BBC. She said: 'I didn't have much confidence when I started at University, but I became involved in Click radio and my confidence grew. The placement was brilliant, it provided vital experience.'

Among students attending Mind the Gap talks and presentations was second year BA (Hons) Journalism student Nick White, from Stockton, who said: 'It's provided some great opportunities to hear from people working in the industry and has been good for networking.'

Steve Pierson, second year BA (Hons) Journalism, from Newcastle, added: 'The networking aspect has been great as it’s a great chance to speak to different people and speak to people who are currently working in the media.'
