First graduate takes up job

02 April 2015

The first graduate has been appointed on to an exciting new scheme to encourage business growth in Hambleton.

Sarah-Jane Hill, a mature student from Teesside University, has been appointed as a Marketing Executive with Stokesley based Fulcran Engineering.

Hambleton District Council has joined forces with Teesside University on a graduate internship scheme which is not only looking to increase business growth but also support graduate employment.

Since its launch in January the scheme has supported 17 businesses which could lead to the appointment of 22 graduates.

Such is the success of the scheme Hambleton’s funding allocation for 2015/16 is almost committed.

'This is great news for the businesses within Hambleton - we hope to see the scheme go from strength to strength,' said Hambleton District Council Director, Dave Goodwin. 'Having our first graduate in post in a Hambleton business is great news for the economy of the district.'

The council’s newly adopted Economic Development Strategy aims to support up to 15 graduates a year to find jobs – councillors have allocated £50,000 a year for three years to make that happen.

And the University has secured funding from the European Regional Development Fund to help 33 businesses in Yorkshire and the Humber with a grant of up to £3,999 to cover a five month internship.

The University also helps with the recruitment process and can provide expert mentoring to drove projects forward.

The Yorkshire graduate internship scheme follows a successful scheme run by Teesside University in the North East. Over the last three years the North East Graduates for Business Scheme has worked with nearly 200 employers and created more than 190 new jobs.

Fulcran Managing Director Dave Pallent-Home said: 'Fulcran Engineering is grateful to Hambleton Council and Teesside University for their help and guidance in taking the stress out of looking for a Marketing Executive.

'The funding allocated will come in very useful in easing the burden on small firms in taking the risk whilst expanding their workforce. Although Sarah-Jane has only been with the firm for a week, she has made an impact on the direction we are taking with regards to the marketing strategy of Fulcran Engineering from now on.'

Teesside University’s Head of Employer Partnerships, Dr Elaine Hooker added: 'This scheme allows companies to bring in skills and expertise with a minimum of risk and expense.

'We are delighted that the first graduate intern has now been recruited and we are looking forward to seeing more companies in Yorkshire take advantage of graduate talent.'
