Clearing helps Chloe go the distance

19 August 2015

A 600 mile round trip was enough to convince Chloe Lavelle that Teesside University was the place where she could fulfil her ambitions.

Chloe is due to start on the BSc (Hons) Forensic Science (Extended) degree after she enquired through Clearing and her journey into higher education was finalised.

This year Teesside University has made Clearing simple and if you are still seeking a University place, you can call the University’s Clearing hotline on 0800 952 0226 or visit the Clearing website.

Chloe, 18, did not quite get the A-Level results she was expecting after studying Chemistry, Biology and Maths. She contacted Teesside University and was reassured that higher education was still an option – within hours she had been offered and accepted a place on the four year programme.

And staff went out of their way to provide Chloe with all the information she needed – arranging for her to make the 600 mile round trip from Cardiff to Teesside so she could see the University first hand and meet the Forensic Science staff.

'When I received my A-Level results I did not really know what to do next as I didn’t have a back-up plan,” explained Chloe.

'It was an incredibly stressful time and I was anxious about not getting a University place. I started researching universities that offered Forensic Science and Teesside really stood out.

'I got in touch through Clearing and the help and advice was first-class – they provided so much reassurance and guidance and I was thrilled to be offered a place.'

Chloe was then put in touch with Melanie Brown, Principal Lecturer in the School of Science & Engineering, who invited her to visit the University.

'Melanie has been great and I know I’ve made the right decision,' added Chloe.

'I did not know much about the University or the area, but after visiting I’m very impressed – all the staff have been fantastic and the facilities here are amazing – I can’t wait to get started.'

Chloe’s mum Alison said: 'It was very upsetting to see Chloe when she thought she wouldn’t be able to go to University. As a parent you want the best for your children and she has worked extremely hard.

'Teesside has been like our saviour and everyone we have spoken to, from the Clearing hotline through to Melanie, has been outstanding.'

Melanie said: 'We know Clearing can be a stressful time for students which is why we want to make the whole process as simple as possible – treating each student individually and trying to find them a solution they are happy with.

'Chloe has shown a great deal of commitment and enthusiasm and I am sure that she will thrive here with us.'
