Haley prepared for new role through Teesside study

25 November 2015

Dr Haley Dee combined study with being mum to two young boys to complete her Doctorate in Counselling Psychology.

Haley first came to Teesside University in 2007 when she began a BSc (Hons) Psychology and progressed to the MSc Forensic Psychology, before deciding to continue her studies at Teesside.

She recently took on a role as a counselling psychologist with Tees, Esk and Wear Valley NHS Trust, working within a CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

Haley, 30, of Consett, said: 'It is a very varied role, which primarily involves providing psychological assessments, advice and interventions to facilitate children and young people who may be experiencing mental health issues. 'Teesside has a lot to offer and, although not the closest University to where I live, I first came here for undergraduate study as the resources, careers services and facilities across the campus are excellent. Teesside also has a fantastic reputation, with friendly and approachable staff. 'The study I completed at Teesside has offered me both the academic qualifications needed to pursue my chosen career and also provided an opportunity to shape my own development by exploring my own professional interests.

'Students are encouraged to expand their knowledge beyond what is directly taught and the experience gained from the work placement completed during the course was invaluable as my passion lies in directly working with individuals experiencing mental health issues.' Haley added: 'As the academic staff are all qualified psychologists, they were able to deliver knowledge from text books along with relevant, real life, complex clinical experiences. 'As a mature student with two children, a husband and mortgage, the staff had genuine understanding and appreciation for individual circumstances.' Haley, who is mum to Calum, 10, and Jaxon, four, added: 'While the course was challenging in terms of deadlines, especially with two young children, it increased my desire to succeed and amplified my sense of achievement once the course was completed. I’m also grateful for the support of husband Trevor and mum Jackie, along with the guidance, support and flexibility of the academic staff.' Haley received the Barbara McReddie Outstanding Achievement Award for contributions to Counselling Psychology, which acknowledges work during study which could make a significant contribution to practice.
