Double award helps to kickstart Marc’s career

27 November 2015

Exhibiting at Teesside University’s annual showcase of students’ work helped Marc Davies to embark on his career in computing.

Marc, who graduates from the BSc (Hons) Computer Science, currently works as a developer with mobile app agency Hedgehog Lab in Newcastle.

His role involves working on creating mobile phone apps, which can vary from games, to apps related to health and fitness.

Originally from Marton in Middlesbrough, 23-year-old Marc was drawn to Teesside University to study due to its location and reputation for computing courses.

He said: 'It’s my local university, but it is also well-known for its teaching in computing and the range of courses available, so it was the obvious choice. “The facilities are brilliant and the placements provide essential experience and a chance to make contacts in the industry.'

He added: 'The degree was focused towards mobile trends and was really up to date, which helps in preparing students and graduates for the jobs they eventually want to do.'

Marc secured his foot in the door to the industry after achieving recognition during ExpoTees, the University’s annual showcase of work by students studying computing.

He said: 'ExpoTees was the starting point for my career as I won two awards for my final year project; the computer science award and mobile development award, and it also led to a job offer from Stockton web development studio Mobile Rockit.'

Marc previously completed an internship with Mobile Rockit, which he felt provided vital experience and an opportunity to make industry contacts. He added: 'The internship opportunities are really important as they help to provide real experience of work. The course itself was brilliant and the campus has been transformed in recent years.'
