Luke Gate is among successful students gathering on Saturday 30 January to celebrate academic achievement in a joint Teesside University and Darlington College graduation ceremony.

The diverse awards being celebrated range from subjects such as engineering and counselling to education studies, hospitality management, journalism and computing. Luke, 26, from Hartlepool, receives the Certificate in Education: Education and Training.

He had previously qualified in electrical installation after serving time with Hartlepool Borough Council, but left industry to take a job at Darlington College. This led to a change of career and he is now a tutor and programme leader.

Luke, who is passionate about teaching and the prospects which higher education opens up to students, says his career change provided a massive opportunity.

He said: 'Never for one minute when I left school did I think I would be in education and teaching. It was purely luck that I ended up at Darlington College, but it has been the best possible move for me.

'I absolutely love it and want to pursue my dream in education and hopefully encourage others to think about. Part-time study is hard when you are working but it really pays off,' he said.

Luke is currently programme leader on the Level 3 Electrical Installation course which is a springboard for aspiring electricians looking for an apprenticeship in industry.

He added: 'I would never have seen myself doing this but the opportunity came along and I feel very lucky to work here. I can’t wait for the graduation event where I can share with my family the extra effort.'

The ceremony is at 2.00pm at Darlington College, with gowning up from 12.30pm
