‘Teesside 2020’ is a five year vision which aims to grow student numbers and places the student learning experience as the key to continuing success.

The corporate strategy document also places emphasis on the importance of growing the University’s research and innovation portfolio and strengthening its ties with business and industry.

The strategy will establish Teesside University’s international reputation for academic excellence and attract students from across the globe.

Over recent years, more than a quarter of a billion pounds has been spent on enhancing the University estate in Middlesbrough and Darlington.

Teesside has also established itself as one of the UK’s leading modern universities and received the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Excellence in Higher Education for its work in the field of Enterprise and Business Engagement. It is one of only a handful of universities to gain Investors in People Gold status, putting the University in the top 7% of employers.

Professor Croney, who became Vice-Chancellor of Teesside University in May last year, will use the Teesside 2020 strategy to build on these achievements and grow the University even further.

He said: 'Teesside 2020 sets out a new vision for the University that raises the aspiration and ambition of Teesside University to be an international university at the heart of the Tees Valley with a reputation for academic excellence.

'It will be an exciting journey that will transform Teesside over the next five years. We will approach this change with enthusiasm, drive and energy, determined to deliver excellence for our students, partners and the communities we serve.'

Aims and outcomes outlined in the vision include: • Improving the student and learning experience by delivering an innovative curriculum, working with employers to develop graduate skills and creating a stimulating learning environment. • Increasing research and innovation by developing research in areas that have real world impact, integrating research into teaching and growing postgraduate study. • Supporting enterprise and business engagement by developing a network of global business and academic partnerships, increasing the number of graduate placements and employability rates and growing the amount of student start-ups and spin-out companies. • An international strategy which will grow international student numbers and facilitate international research and knowledge transfer. • A resources and business management strategy which will ensure the financial sustainability and resilience of the University and grow student numbers and revenue on and off campus.

Chairman of the Board of Governors Alastair MacColl added: 'The new University strategy will build on a period of unprecedented growth for the University that has seen us invest more than £250 million to develop our estate.

'When this investment is combined with Teesside 2020 it will give us the opportunity to deliver a vision that will allow the University to realise its ambition to be a University with an international reputation for academic excellence.'
