Rob, 32, of Middlesbrough, who is working as a staff nurse at Evelina London Children's Hospital, graduates from the BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies (Child).

While completing his degree, Rob was nominated for the Student Nurse of the Year (Children Nursing) award in the Student Nursing Times Awards 2016.

He said: 'I was really flattered and delighted to be shortlisted for the award, it was a real privilege and it felt lovely to represent all the fantastic nursing students at Teesside.'

Rob felt his nomination reflected the voluntary work he was involved with at the University in both peer support as a student buddy and in helping out on enrolment days and Open Days, talking to potential students about his own experience of the course. He also volunteers with a national charity which provides respite holidays for children with special needs.

He said: 'I came to Teesside to study as I was working a specialist teaching assistant in a special school for six years prior to starting nursing. I was wanting to do more with my career and wanted to study something which would give me a vocational qualification where I could progress within the job.

'I chose nursing for lots of reasons. I have always been passionate about caring for others, I have lots of experience of working and volunteering with children with special needs and have got a lot of enjoyment out of that, and I felt could bring that experience and knowledge with me while learning a new profession.'

During the course Rob completed several placements at local hospitals and in the community, which he described as a fantastic experience.

He added: 'I was really impressed with Teesside and the training we get, from the course itself to hearing from qualified nurses and other professionals.'
