Volunteers wanted for quit-smoking project

22 February 2001

Volunteers are needed to review a self-help video, designed to motivate young pregnant women to reduce or quit smoking. The University of Teesside is seeking pregnant volunteers aged between 16 and 25 who live in the Middlesbrough or Redcar & Cleveland area, and wish to reduce or quit smoking.

Last year the University of Teesside investigated types of health advice, information and support currently available to pregnant women with regard to smoking, funded by the Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland Health Action Zones. The results from this were incorporated into a new self-help video. Volunteers are now sought to evaluate the video, which offers practical advice and information on quitting smoking, including the planning and preparation, dealing with cravings and maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle.

The project is being undertaken by the University of Teesside’s School of Health with support from midwives and doctors at South Tees Maternity Service. The Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland Health Action Zone Locality Groups have funded the projects. Full ethical approval has been given by the Nursing and Paramedical Research Advisory Group.

If you are interested in volunteering or wish to receive further information about the projects, please contact Marian McDonald or Rebecca Ware on Freephone: 0800 052 6155. Or you can e-mail: Marian.McDonald@tees.ac.uk or Rebecca.English@tees.ac.uk or fax: 01642 384123.
