New apprenticeships launched at Teesside

A new initiative allowing employees to earn while they learn has been launched at Teesside University.

James Sullivan, who is studying the Higher Apprenticeship in Health while working as a Healthcare Assistant in A&E at University Hospital of North Tees.

The University is now offering Higher and Degree Apprenticeships, whose qualifications and standards are jointly designed with employers to ensure they deliver the skills they need.

Unlike traditional apprenticeships, there is no age restriction; and for employers not paying the levy, most of the cost is covered by Government grant.

Teesside is already offering a number of apprenticeships, among them the Higher Apprenticeship in Health (Assistant Practitioner) which has been developed to meet the needs of the health profession. The 170 students currently enrolled on the apprenticeship will receive a Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care Practice when they qualify.

Linda Nelson, Associate Dean in Teesside University’s School of Health & Social Care, said: 'By completing the apprenticeship, students are opening up many more opportunities for a professional career.

'The feedback has been extremely positive. The course is really helping them make the link between theory and practice.'

The University has developed a range of apprenticeships combining an honours or foundation degree with workplace experience and skills.

The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship combines excellent business education, work-based learning and professional development to support the growth of graduate level managers.

From May, Teesside University Business School is offering the prestigious Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA), which confers the BA (Hons) Management Practice along with membership of the Chartered Management Institute.

Chartered Manager status is the highest possible accreditation in the management profession. Through the CMDA it recognises the talent and achievements of both new and existing managers.
