Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations

Two Teesside students are putting on a show that raises awareness of a series of taboo subjects.

Taboo Tales is a night of drama and dance, putting the spotlight on a range of issues including rape, abortion, abuse, racism, body shaming and LGBTQ+.

The show is producer and director Lauren McGarvey and Sasha Westfield’s final major project as part of their BA (Hons) Performing Arts degree at Teesside University.

On Tuesday 16 May Taboo Tales will take an audience at Stockton Riverside College on a rollercoaster of emotions, raising awareness of issues that are commonplace but all too often unspoken.

Different styles and genres of music, dance and drama will lead them on a journey through the pain that many people encounter throughout their lives.

Sasha said: 'In today’s society there are things we do and talk about that still attract a negative atmosphere.

'This atmosphere creates an isolated space for many individuals, and we still have a long way to go as there are still many taboo subjects out there that haven’t been unlocked which raises the need to start a discussion.

'As a society, these subjects need to be addressed in a way that’s comfortable and what better way to do this than through the arts?

'The evening will not only educate but make sure that people are aware that these things happen in life and that they shouldn’t be afraid to talk about them.'

Taboo Tales is on in the Margaret Armstrong Theatre, Stockton Riverside College, from 7.00pm on Tuesday 16 May.

Due to the nature of this show, audience members must be aged 18 or over. Tickets are £6 for adults and £5 concessions (students and OAPs).
