Postgraduate computing students have work published

12 November 2017

Research into computer systems by postgraduate students from the University’s School of Computing, Media & the Arts has been recently published.

Dr Biju Issac, Senior Lecturer in Computing in the University’s School of Computing, Media and the Arts, said: 'These graduates are all examples of how our postgraduate students have shown good research potential.'

MSc Computer Security and Networks graduate Syed Ali Raza Shah, has had his project work accepted to the Future Generation Computer Systems, The International Journal of eScience.

His research examined the performance comparison of intrusion detection systems for accurately detecting malicious traffic on computer networks. Link to research paper.

Viktor Richert, who graduated from the MSc Network Systems in 2014, worked on the implementation of a Modified Wireless Sensor Network MAC Protocol for critical environments. His research work has now been published in Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing.

Wireless Sensor nodes (WSN) are powered by a battery and the primary challenge is to conserve and reduce the energy. The Medium Access Control (MAC) layer is responsible for the establishment of a reliable and efficient communication link between WSN nodes and that has implications on energy used.

The aim of Viktor’s work was to create a new protocol which would overcome disadvantages in existing protocols. The newly proposed MAC protocol in the paper uses an improved variant which implements weak signal detection. Link to research paper.

Two other MSc Computer Security and Networks graduates have also successfully seen their research published in recent years.

Wael Alzaid, whose paper was published last year in the International Journal of Business Data Communications and Networking, examines transition technologies and security attacks. Link to research paper.

A research paper by Mohanad Albayati, published in 2015, looked at analysis of intelligent classifiers and enhancing the detection accuracy for intrusion detection system. Link to research paper.
