Teesside University ranked among the best in Europe for Teaching Excellence

Teaching Excellence at Teesside University has today been recognised as among the best in Europe in a prestigious new ranking.

Teesside’s inclusion in the Times Higher Education (THE) European Teaching Rankings 2018 is the latest in a series of accolades for the University this year which has seen it climb league tables and its reputation for academic excellence enhanced nationally and internationally.

Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Professor Paul Croney said: 'We are delighted to be recognised in yet another well-respected independent ranking for our academic performance.

'It is further evidence that our vision to be an internationally-renowned University, with an outstanding student and learning experience is becoming a reality – something which is being noticed by potential students and stakeholders both in the UK and abroad.

'This listing comes just a month after we were included as one of the world’s best Young Universities (aged 50 or under) in the THE Young University Rankings and we have also seen significant rises in every league table published in the past 18 months.

'It is gratifying to see all the hard work of our staff and the performance of our students being recognised in this way and it is another considerable boost for Teesside University’s growing reputation for academic excellence.'

THE’s European Ranking strives to provide richer and deeper insights into global higher education, with indicators focused around resources, engagement, outcomes and environment. Teesside has been placed in the 151-200 band overall and it sits proudly as 11th in Europe for its teaching environment.

Professor Mark Simpson, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) at Teesside University said: 'To be listed in the THE European Teaching Rankings is recognition of the fantastic work going on across the University.

'With the implementation of our Future Facing Learning programme, we are seeking to empower our students to deliver impact on a global scale, providing them with the knowledge, skills, and tools to achieve sustainable success in a connected global workplace.

'First year undergraduate students joining us for a full degree in the forthcoming academic year will be issued with iPads and a specially selected toolkit of apps to help them thrive and succeed during their time at university and beyond. To support the principles underpinning Future Facing Learning, teaching staff who deliver on first year modules have also been provided with iPads – undergone training and are engaged in an innovative University development programme to embed digital technology within learning and teaching. The deployment will be scaled to incorporate all teaching staff over the following academic year.
