Four law graduates have been recognised for their work after picking up awards from regional firms during Teesside University’s graduation ceremonies.

A number of law firms sponsor annual awards at Teesside University, offering cash prizes and work experience opportunities to high flying graduates.

Over 3,000 graduates recently celebrated their success during the annual academic award ceremonies.

And four students graduating from LLB (Hons) Law got their careers off to the perfect start by picking up additional awards during the week.

Lucinda Smart, 23, won the Toby Tilly Memorial Prize from the Endeavour Partnership, named in honour of former partner Toby who sadly passed away.

Nazia Aftab, from Endeavour, presented the award to Lucinda and said: 'Toby was a very talented and well respected solicitor. He would be very proud of Lucinda who has done exceptionally well in her studies. I am sure she will go on to enjoy a fantastic career.'

Lucinda said: 'It is overwhelming – I was not expecting to win the award but it is a really proud day.

'To receive an award in Toby’s name gives me something to live up to as I plan my future. I will do the best I can to make him proud.'

Anna Aldred, 21, won the Outstanding Achievement Award from Freers Askew Bunting Solicitors and will gain one week’s work experience with the firm. She said: 'I feel very proud and very emotional and I am looking forward to the future.

'Studying at Teesside University has been a life-changing experience which has enhanced my personal and professional skills in ways that I could not imagine.'

Director Rachel Dyson said: 'We have been working with Teesside University for a number of years but this is the first time we have offered a graduate prize.

'We were really impressed with the calibre of students and delighted to be able to help somebody who is extremely talented and at the start of what I am sure will be a successful career.'

Andrew Winn, 21, and Shannon Cranston, 22, received prizes from Watson Woodhouse and Macks Solicitors for Outstanding Contribution to Teesside Law Clinic and the Macks Solicitors Prize for Best Legal Research Project. Both received the opportunity to complete valuable work experience.

'I am hoping to eventually get into employment law so the work experience will be invaluable,' said Shannon.

'Teesside University has been a great experience, you get so much support from the staff and to graduate is a really proud feeling.'

Andrew, who is particularly interested in civil litigation and family law, added: 'I am really happy, but also relieved to have completed the degree. To win the prize is a proud achievement and I am sure the placement opportunity will be extremely useful.'

Anthony McCarthy, Macks Solicitors, said: 'It was a real honour to attend the graduation ceremonies and to meet the winners of our awards. It is clear that the graduates of the Teesside University law department are amongst the best and the brightest in the country and we are proud to be associated with them.'
