International links for Teesside University

A global company which is currently revolutionising transportation systems around the world has formed a new strategic partnership with Teesside University which will enhance collaborative research and provide exciting opportunities for students and graduates.

Cubic Transportation Systems is a world leader in intelligent travel applications and is the company behind the Oyster Card. Founded in America in 1951, it also has offices in Australia, India, the USA and Europe, as well as a base closer to home in Stockton’s Princes Wharf.

Cubic Transportation Systems has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Teesside University’s School of Computing, Media & the Arts which formalises a commitment to work together and maximise collaborative opportunities.

Head of Finance Leanne Wilkinson and Software Engineering Manager Matt Brooke are both Teesside University graduates and they returned to the campus to sign the formal agreement with Professor Jane Turner OBE DL, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise and Business Engagement).

Matt said: 'I am extremely passionate about Cubic and extremely passionate about this area. By working so closely with Teesside University we will be able to access the talent and skills of students and graduates and introduce them to career opportunities that are right on their doorstep.

'You cannot drive down a motorway in the UK without seeing software and technology which has been developed by Cubic. The Memorandum of Understanding is a fantastic opportunity for the company and the University to work together and harness our collective skills and ambitions for the benefit of the region.'

Leanne added: 'I don’t think we shout load enough about our success and by working with Teesside University we will be able to utilise the expertise of staff, students and graduates to provide a whole range of collaborative opportunities.'

Cubic Transportation Systems is a leading integrator of payment and information solutions and related services for intelligent travel applications in the transportation industry. It is dedicated to using cutting edge technology to reinvent transportation and the company recently won a contract in Sydney, Australia, to embed its software within the city’s transport system.

Teesside University’s School of Computing, Media & the Arts is at the forefront of digital technology and is a centre of excellence in the creative and digital aspects of computing, games and animation, web and multimedia. The School provides a world-class learning environment with cutting edge hardware and software and its graduates have gone on to work at some of the world’s biggest and most innovative companies.

The Memorandum of Understanding outlines a commitment to work together on short and long-term training, research, student placement opportunities, staff development and graduate recruitment.
