An exhibition showcasing the work of recent Teesside University graduates is celebrating their work as artists.

Beyond Graduation brings together the work of 29 BA (Hons) and MA Fine Art graduates who achieved their academic degrees from 2007 to 2018.

The exhibition coincides with the announcement that MIMA is to lead Teesside University’s Fine Art provision with the newly created MIMA School of Fine Art.

Since completing their studies at Teesside University, the graduates have all gone on to forge individual careers for themselves, some using their creative talents to work as artists, teachers and therapists. Others have taken a different career path, while maintaining their creative skills in their spare time.

Beyond Graduation was set up by award-winning artist Julie Macbean, who graduated from the MA Fine Art in 2012.

Julie enrolled at Teesside University after serving 22 years in the armed forces. As a student she was awarded prizes for her work and since graduating, has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally.

Whilst forging a career as an artist she is also a part-time technical demonstrator in the Fine Art printmaking department at Teesside University and occasionally runs workshops for school and community art groups.

Each artist is exhibiting a piece of work demonstrating their art practice as it is now, free from academic pressures and adapted to fit in with their lifestyle and studio facilities.

It is such a privilege to be part of this brilliant exhibition

The exhibition can be viewed at The Heritage Gallery at Cargo Fleet, Middlesbrough, until Wednesday 3 April. It moves to Crown Street Gallery in Darlington from Saturday 6 April to Thursday 16 May.

Dr Michael Lent, Head of Fine Art at Teesside University, said: 'This exhibition comes at an exciting time for the Fine Art programmes as we launch the MIMA School of Art, confirming Teesside’s reputation as a cultural destination led by the University.

'Our alumni in this show signal the first stage of this transition, as we shape stronger bonds with past students, forging a spectacular future with the world-leading opportunities at MIMA.'

Linda Stannard, who is among the Fine Art graduates exhibiting in the show, said: 'It is such a privilege to be part of this brilliant exhibition. This shows the range and diversity of artists working on Teesside today.”

The exhibition was launched at the Heritage Gallery last month in a special event where curator Julie Macbean hosted 140 guests, exhibitors and Teesside University VIPs. The Heritage Gallery is one of three under the umbrella of Python Arts: Python Properties, which installs and runs art galleries in commercial office buildings they own.
