A Dickensian degree project from Robert

07 August 2001

Robert Lonsdale has explored the world of television and theatre set design and costume, courtesy of his BA (Hons) degree in Entertainment Design Crafts. The BA degree is taught at the Hartlepool Campus of Cleveland College of Art & Design, and validated by the University of Teesside.

Robert, 23, from Barlby Selby, North Yorkshire, achieved his degree in July. Previously he gained a Higher National Diploma in Theatre and Television Design from the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside.

He said: “I’ve always wanted to work in theatre design ever since I studied at York College. I’m hoping to work in the area of set or costume design now as I really enjoy these. My parents Andrea and Peter have always been behind me in my career choice.”

Robert’s final year project focused on Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist. He designed a model set made of timber and card, to be used in a fictitious animation of the Victorian novel. Robert said: “Oliver Twist was one of the few films and books I really enjoyed as a child. I’ve got fond memories of watching the film in past Christmases.”
