The world’s a stage for Ruth

07 August 2001

Ruth Williamson has explored the world of theatre and television set design and costume, courtesy of her BA (Hons) degree in Entertainment Design Crafts. The BA degree is taught at the Hartlepool Campus of Cleveland College of Art & Design, and validated by the University of Teesside.

Ruth, 21, from Peterlee, County Durham achieved her degree in July. In the autumn she starts a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, which will qualify her as a Secondary Design & Technology teacher in summer 2002.

Former Shotton Hall Comprehensive pupil Ruth said: “I’ve always been interested in the theatre and costumes, I’ve enjoyed seeing shows in London and Sunderland. Miss Saigon was a particular favourite. On the degree I really enjoyed researching period costume, it was interesting and an area I’d never really looked at before.”

Ruth’s final year project focused on a fictitious ballerina called Coppelia, which she found in a collection of short stories. Ruth added: “I like ballet and originally thought about The Nutcracker first for my project, then came across the short story. From my initial sketches and primary research, it took about a year to complete. I was pleased and relieved when it was finished.”

Ruth is the daughter of Christine and Michael Williamson.
