New Mental Health web site unveiled at Teesside

05 September 2001

A New Mental Health web site specifically for students will be launched at the University of Teesside at 10.30am on Friday 14 September by the University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Derek Fraser in the Students’ Union foyer, First floor, Students’ Union & Refectory Building.

The Mental Health web site is an entirely new development and can be found on the Internet at https://www.tees.ac.uk/sections/stud/mental_health.cfm. It was developed by Ian Grieve, 23, who is originally from Trowbridge, Wiltshire, and recently achieved a First Class BSc (Hons) degree in Multimedia at the University.

The web site displays a range of valuable features for University of Teesside students, including:

A directory of support services - This allows students to find help and support appropriate to their needs. Students can click on the area relevant to their circumstances, and a list of support agencies will be displayed. Contact details are included, with a brief description of what each particular agency can offer. This directory will be updated annually.

The Know About…series - Information relating to specific difficulties and mental health issues that may be encountered specifically by students. It provides details about how to recognise and deal with some of the issues and how to support someone you know, who is experiencing difficulties. Information is also available about appropriate support within the University.

Counselling - Students will be able to find out more about counselling services available within the University.

Fiona Hyslop, Mental Health Co-ordinator at the University said: "People who experience mental health difficulties (including friends and family), often find it difficult to access information about what they are going through and what they can do about it. The existence of good quality, accessible information can help to reduce the stigma and negative stereotypes that often surround mental health and also makes a positive contribution to the prevention and recovery of mental health difficulties.

"The Internet provides us with a fantastic opportunity to provide information to students and staff, and take another step forward in the promotion of positive mental health at the University of Teesside. Ian Grieve's web site brought together everything that we were looking for."
