How was your time at Teesside?

It was rewarding as it served a stepping stone in securing a PhD position where I learnt new scientific approach to environmental issues in terms of using cheap source of biomass for cleaning up oil spillage. Since graduating I was employed as a PhD researcher in plant breeding at the University of Copenhagen, working on a sorghum project to select best varieties for bioenergy and food. I then took a consultant agronomist post, working with farmers to improve their cropping system, yield and profit.

Why did you choose Teesside?

Teesside was the most affordable university in the UK when I applied. I spent months searching the internet for UK universities that had top facilities for research studies in biotechnology and, most importantly, affordable for my tight budget. Teesside came up tops and I have been delighted with my experience. The community is calm, peaceful and welcoming for studies and the North East region is well connected and close by to explore at the weekends. I choose to study biotechnology with a specific interest in environmental biotechnology because this is the hot topic in our present day world where we aim for a much cleaner energy to preserve our environment and the future. The teaching staff were amazing and really helpful.

How was the campus?

I enjoyed the clubs and student associations in the Students’ Union, I was a member of the Nigerian Society.

Do you have any ambitions for the future?

I have begun a two year post-doctoral fellowship to work on beta carotene project in cassava, maize and other South African staple food using HPLC analysis. I hope to work in the future with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture in Nigeria to improve and revolutionise the agricultural sector of my country.
