MA Creative Writing

Laura is the content team leader at Visualsoft

The best part about the course was the supportive environment between classmates and the tutors. We worked hard, built a great supportive network and were a tight-knit group that could trust each other with our writing.

How did you find your course?

After my BA (Hons) English with Creative Writing I stayed on to complete my MA Creative Writing. My master’s course was brilliant because it not only helped me build on what I was already comfortable with writing, but took me out of my comfort zone which helped me to develop a love of writing poetry as well as fiction. The classroom environment was always really relaxed and a completely safe space for sharing work and helping each other with our writing. The writing showcase at the end of the course was a great goal to work towards and, while performing is a scary thing for most people, the course is set up to build your confidence in writing and sharing your work on and off stage.

What was the best part of your course?

The best part about the course was the supportive environment between classmates and the tutors. We worked hard, built a great supportive network and were a tight-knit group that could trust each other with our writing.

Did you have a favourite module?

The Skills and Techniques module had the most impact for me. I experimented with a range of different writing techniques, and it helped me develop some truly valuable skills that I'm able to use in my writing career now.

Did you make use of the facilities during your studies?

I had a good relationship with the careers service. They gave some really valuable advice about career routes I might be interested in, how to write my CV, write a personal statement and also how to change and tailor my CV over time.

Have you had any work or placements whilst here?

While studying I worked as school assistant at the University. I completed a UCPD in Marketing and applied for my first marketing job as an SEO content writer at Visualsoft. I've been at Visualsoft for nearly fours and I'm now the content team leader for the SEO team.

What skills have you gained?

My ability to look at a piece of writing from a creative point of view has been a huge part in making the content I produce so successful for SEO, and other skills such as proofreading and giving constructive feedback have been really valuable.

How was your time at Teesside?

The route to finding my career wasn't a straight line. But Teesside was always there to support and advise on my goals and aspirations as they developed –they continued to give me the support and skills I needed to achieve the career I have today.
