Dr Biju Issac has been in the field of higher education since 1995. In his first job, he worked as a project assistant in Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India. After an initial post-grad university teaching experience in Madras University in India, he relocated to Malaysia. There he worked with two Australian universities, i.e. University of Wollongong for 2 years and Swinburne University of Technology for 8 years. He has moved into Teesside University in 2012. He has done Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Electronics and Communication Engineering and Master of Computer Applications (MCA) with honours. He has also finished PhD in Networking and Mobile Communications in 2008. His professional memberships are: Chartered Engineer (CEng), Senior IEEE member, Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and IET member. Dr Issac is research active and has authored more than 90 refereed publications as conference papers, journal papers and book chapters.

Research interests

Dr Issac's research interests are in Wireless Networks, Computer or Network Security, Mobility Management, Machine learning applications like Intelligent text or data mining, Intelligent Intrusion Detection Systems, Spam detection etc., Cloud Optimization algorithms, Secure Electronic Voting, Image processing etc. 

PhD and research opportunities

Dr Issac has supervised MRes or MSc (research) students of Swinburne University of Technology to completion. He is currently supervising some PhD students and is keen to get PhD queries from good potential students. Some of the possible PhD topics are as follows:

External roles and professional activities

Dr Issac is in the technical programme committee of many international IEEE conferences and on the editorial board of international journals. He is the Associate Editor of "IEEE Access" which is a multi-disciplinary open access journal and the Editorial board member of journals like IET Wireless Sensor Systems, International Journal of Advancements in Computing Technology, International Journal of Adaptive and Innovative Systems etc.

External research collaborations

Dr Issac collaborates with universities in Malaysia and India, in the area of image processing, machine learning and text-mining. 

Learning and teaching interests

Being a Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Dr Issac has lot of interest in improving his teaching activities to make it more relevant and interesting to his students, through the use of technology tools and through the use of case-study based teaching. He has published some educational research papers in the area of e-learning and assessments.

Enterprise interests

Dr Issac is interested to work with the industries in the areas of network security (like intelligent intrusion detection system or similar), image processing and intelligent text mining of qualitative reports.
