Joan obtained her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in 2004, MSc in Dental Public Health in 2006 and MSc in Public Health (Analysis) in 2010. She has worked at NHS primary care organisations as a public health researcher/analyst and undertaken work around understanding health needs of communities and providing accurate health information to guide health care service planning, delivery and evaluation.

Joan is currently a full time PhD student undertaking research in knowledge translation in oral health promotion. The study will be exploring the processes of knowledge exchange or transfer and the ways in which research evidence is transformed into policy and subsequently affects practice. An investigation of the implementation process (strategic and operational processes) connected with existing interventions focused on establishing a habit of supervised tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpastes amongst nursery and primary school children will be carried out in the study.
