Dr Marie Gressmann worked with people with disabilities and their family carers as a registered nurse, for many years, in a range of care environments.  She has had experience of profound and multiple disabilities, challenging behaviour, forensic services, people with autism spectrum disorder and also managment and leadership, as well as training and development of staff of all levels and professions allied to learning disability services. 

Marie joined the academic staff of Teesside University in 1999 and now leads a range of modules and programmes at pre and post registration, as well as leading the pre-registration learning disabilty field.   She has extensive links with practice colleagues and is committed to a collaborative, caring and compassionate value base.

Recent research focused on the experiences of family carers who have a relative with a learning disabilty living in a residential care environment.

Marie is  Doctor of Philosophy (Learning Disabilties), her PhD was studied at the Tizard Centre, University of Kent at Canterbury, supervised by Professor Jim Mansell and Doctor Julie Beadle-Brown

She also has a Masters in Health Sciences;

BSc hons in professional studies in health care;

Diploma in Health studies

Certificate in Education

Her teaching certificate is registered with the NMC, she is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

Research interests

Marie is working on publishing her work from her PhD.  Her research is 'family carers of people with learning disabilities.'

She has also conducted research for her masters degee, into the role of the Community nurse and health facilitation
