From a clerical background, Karyn qualified as a dental nurse from the Royal London Hospital in 1994 with a certificate in oral health education. After a year’s post qualification experience at Guy’s Hospital in London, she was accepted on the dental hygiene and dental therapy diploma course, back at the Royal London Hospital. She qualified in 1997, gaining the Smith Kliene Research Project Prize.

Karyn has worked in both private and NHS dental practices, initially as a dental hygienist - then she completed a residential refresher course for dental therapists in Manchester.

In 2001 she took up the post of tutor dental hygienist at Newcastle dental hospital, successfully completing a certificate in education (2003). Karyn had spent three years (2002-05) on the British Dental Therapy Association (BADT) Council as Ordinary Member and eventually Journal Editor.

In October 2009 she became part-time Senior Lecturer in Dental Therapy in the dental care professional team at Teesside University. Karyn is currently in GDP as a clinical dental therapist, while studying for BSc (Hons) in Promoting Practice Effectiveness.
