Previous international visits

Professor Renzo Di Felice
Professor of Chemical Engineering, University of Genoa, Italy

Professor Di Felice’s research activity focuses on the fluid dynamic behaviour of two-phase suspensions, with particular relevance on liquid fluidisation of solid particles and on sedimentation velocity of monosized spheres. His recent work has been within the field of biotechnology and focused on the use of fluidised technology in biological systems.

Professor Di Felice visited Teesside in February 2009 and will return for a second visit next year. He was hosted by Professor Eric Senior of the Technology Futures Institute. Masterclasses and seminars delivered during his visit focused on transport phenomena and reaction engineering and the fluid dynamic behaviour of solid-fluid suspensions.

Dr Jonathan Bordo
Associate Professor, Trent University, Canada

Dr Bordo is one of the leading scholars in the interdisciplinary study of landscape and defines new parameters for cultural studies. His writings that bridge his interests between picturing, testimony and institutions of memory have been widely published in international and national journals and collections.

Dr Bordo visited Teesside in April 2009 and was hosted by Dr Robert Burden of the Institute of Design, Culture and the Arts. Masterclasses and seminars delivered by Dr Bordo brought together the different interests of the institute members; visual and textual cultures (film, photography, art and cultural history and theory) and set the agenda for cutting edge discussion of topographical representations. The keynote lecture, ‘Wilderness as a symbolic form – a prologue’ was the opening presentation at the ‘Spatial Practices’ Symposium: ‘Topographies, landscape, locations of identities’ and two master-classes addressed the study of landscape, testimony and place through ‘Critical Topography’.

Dr Sjoerd de Vries
Associate Professor, University of Twente, The Netherlands

Dr de Vries’ area of research interest is in the application of networked communication in knowledge-rich contexts including communication through intranet, company portals, knowledge networks, electronic learning environments, communities and groupware. His interest focuses on the question of how we can understand the adoption and development of these communication forms.

Dr de Vries visited Teesside in June 2009 and was hosted by Professor Paul van Schaik of the Social Futures Institute. Masterclasses and seminars delivered during his visit focused on e-benchmarking and VentureLab, a university faculty to promote collaborative ventures at the University of Twente.

Professor Pieter Judson
Professor of History, Swarthmore College, USA

Professor Judson is a leading authority in the field of Central European History. His research interests focus on Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and on Eastern Europe in the period 1848-1948, particularly concerning inter-ethnic conflict and the formation of identities in Habsburg Austria-Hungary.

Professor Judson is a visiting fellow, and visited Teesside for an initial visit in June 2009, with further visits planned in 2010. He was hosted by Professor Matthew Rampley, Director of the Institute of Design, Culture and the Arts. During his first visit he participated in a roundtable discussion with members of the institute and delivered a presentation, ‘The Austro-Hungarian Empire: was it an Empire?’ as part of a ‘Symposium on Social, Cultural; and Political Practices: Central and Eastern Europe 1870-1939’ which was held at Teesside on Saturday 20 June 2009 and involved speakers from a number of UK universities.

Professor Shimin Wang
Professor in Applied Physics, Southeast University, China

Professor Wang is a prominent expert in measurement and instrumentation engineering, multi-phase flow management and combustion diagnosis.

Professor Wang visited Teesside in July 2009 and was hosted by Dr. Jianyong Zhang of the Technology Futures Institute. Masterclasses and seminars delivered during his visit focused on air-solids flow velocity measurement based on frequency spectrum, advanced management and diagnosis technology applied in utility boilers and the investigation of in-situ measurement of flue gas concentration by means of Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy.
