International delegates discuss new building technologies

29 November 2013

Delegates from around the world have discussed cutting-edge developments in building technology at a conference organised by Teesside University academics.

More than 100 leading academics and industry experts from 23 countries took part in the 13 International Conference on Construction Applications of Virtual Reality (ConVR).

The conference, held at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in London, was organised by Professor Nashwan Dawood and Dr Mohamad Kassem from the Technology Futures Institute at Teesside University.

Seventy papers were presented at the event which discussed the latest applications of virtual reality, augmented reality and Building Information Modelling in the construction industry.

The highlight of the conference was a keynote speech by Jeremy Beeton, the Director General of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, who talked about the lessons and best practices learned from the successful management of last year’s games.

Delegates, who came from as far afield as the United States, Japan, South Korea and the Middle East, also visited the London 2012 site at Stratford.

Professor Dawood organised the first ConVR conference at Teesside University in 2000 and since then it has been held in Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia and the Middle East.

Next year it will be held be held in the United Arab Emirates. Professor Dawood said: 'This conference has helped to develop a community of research in this area and one of the highlights each year is to see the new research which has emerged out of this community.

'Without this platform it would be difficult to communicate with each other as it helps to create an environment to discuss, publish and collaborate with people round the world.

'It helps us to understand new issues and look at how we can move forward and has been a tremendous way to test research.

'It was also extremely interesting to visit the Olympic Park and see how new technologies can benefit massive projects such as this.'

Other speakers at the conference included Professor David Philip, Head of BIM Implementation at the Cabinet Office’s Efficiency and Reform Group; Professor Anthony Steed, Head of Virtual Environments and Computer Graphics at University College London and Professor Raymond Issa, from the University of Florida’s School of Building Construction.
