Dr. Tracey Crosbie is a Senior Lecturer in Research and Energy Reduction in the School of Science and Engineering at Teesside University.  She is a transdisciplinary academic with degrees in the social and technical sciences.  Dr. Crosbie has been researching issues associated with energy consumption in built environment for almost 20 years. She has a great deal of experience in leading the development of successful collaborative research proposals and managing work in national and international interdisciplinary research and innovation projects.  She leads the Sustainable Environments Grand Challenge research theme at the university, her role being to facilitate multidisciplinary research across the university’s different schools.

In line with the demands of research into the issues surrounding sustainability Dr. Crosbie’s academic background spans both the social and technical sciences.  Her interest in sustainability underpinned her PhD awarded by the University of Newcastle, School of Architecture Planning and Landscape (2004) explores the social and environmental impacts of the new business practices that arose out of the privatisation and liberalisation of the utilities industries. This built upon her previously awarded academic qualifications which include an MSc in IT awarded by Teesside University, a Postgraduate Certificate (PGc) in Social Welfare and Social Work awarded by the University of Northumbria and a BA (Hons) in Sociology and Social Policy awarded by the University of Durham.

Research interests

Dr Crosbie’s current research interests focus on the development of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research methodologies, sustainability policy and its implementation, urban development and smart cities and smart energy infrastructures.

She managed the IDEAS project funded by the European Commission (EC) which was successfully concluded at the end of 2015.  She is leading work packages in two current smart grid project called inteGRIDy and DR-BOB also funded by the EC.   She is currently leading the design and implementation of the evaluation strategy for a Big Lottery funded community based project called One Planet Middlesbrough: Communities living sustainably.  Dr. Crosbie has also participated in a DECC expert panels on energy related behaviours. Other recent large collaborative research projects in which Dr. Crosbie has led work include SEMANCO and IntUBE.
