After gaining a civil engineering degree at Teesside University, Darren spent three years researching his PhD: ‘A Knowledge-Based Computer System for the Engineering Management of Housing Subsidence Cases’. Papers based on this were published in a number of engineering-related journals including Construction and Architectural Management, Computer Methods in Structural Masonry, Developments in Computer-Aided Design and Modelling for Structural Engineering.

Darren took the knowledge gained from his PhD into his first job in industry at WSP plc where he, as a civil engineer, managed residential building construction/repair projects for 4years. Darren moved on to Ferguson McIlveen LLP where within the Public Health Engineering section of this multi-disciplinary practice, managed heavy civil and environmental engineering projects. Darren became a Chartered Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers in 1994.

In 2002 Darren returned to Teesside University as a project manager and research fellow with the Civil Engineering research unit undertaking consultation, research and development in the built environment. He worked on a European Regional Development Fund project to help local construction companies in adopting best practice and information technologies in order to improve their competitiveness.

Darren is now a Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering and an HEA Fellow. He supervises MSc and PhD students researching the field of civil engineering, and teaches the following topics: Structural Mechanics, Construction Technology, Structural Concrete Design, Civil Engineering Construction and Construction Management. Past roles include Programme Leader for the MSc and Undergraduate Civil Engineering programmes.

Research interests

Darren’s research interest is generally within the field of civil engineering around topic he teaches. The focus of his PhD supervision is currently in risk management.
