About Bridget Stewart

Before coming to Teesside, Dr Stewart was a Principal Researcher in the Steelmaking and Continuous Casting Department at Tata Steel Research. There she led the work in her specialist fields of continuous casting mould powders, as-cast surface quality and scale formation. This included international multi-partner projects, with other research institutes, universities and steel companies in Europe, which she led as Project Coordinator.

Bridget is an Expert Evaluator of research proposals in Steel Area (TGS3 Continuous Casting) for the European Commission and also reviews papers for journals and conferences.

She is always keen to promote science and engineering as an interesting and rewarding career. She is a STEM Ambassador and was President of the Cleveland Institution of Engineers (the local branch of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining) in 2011-12, responsible for organising technical lectures, visits and networking events for the engineering community in the Tees Valley.

Dr Stewart studied Chemistry at the University of Newcastle followed by a PhD Scholarship in Materials Chemistry (Glass and Slags) at the University of Aberdeen. She joined Teesside in May 2011 as Senior Lecturer in Materials Engineering, teaching materials engineering and manufacturing modules to undergraduates of all engineering disciplines.

Research interests

Bridget’s research interests include developing new, more environmentally friendly mould powders for continuous casting, improving as-cast steel surface quality and developing new methods for characterising metals, mould powders, slags and glasses.
