Jonathan Roberts is a course leader for the MSc Youth Work and Community Development Work programme that attracts youth work managers from across the North East and Yorkshire. The course has grown in attracting students and the University has invested over £60,000 in developing youth work staff in the region.

Jonathan has worked with the Children’s Workforce Development Council to develop a foundation degree - FdA Working With Young People and Young People’s Services - and feedback the requirements for an Integrated Qualifications Framework for the Children’s Workforce.

Since 2005 he has been involved in the national development of the Muslim Youthwork Foundation and has secured three years funding from the Department for Children, Families and Schools to drive this work forward. This project seeks to respond to the lives of the young Muslims in Britain, rather than events.

Jonathan is one of the managers and learning provider for the Department for Communities and Local Government programme for Neighbourhood Renewal Skills development ‘Renewal Academy’. This national programme provides a regular cycle of courses for strategists and practitioners.

• History of youth work and the development of youth work policy as part of Jonathan’s teaching and research work
• Study of community development and neighbourhood initiatives including a report for Redcar and Cleveland on capacity building
• Improving Neighbourhood Renewal in the New Deal for Communities area of Sunderland

  If a diverse society is a successful society then the North could be in a spot of bother. New figures reveal it is the least multicultural area in Britain, with fewer than 3% of people speaking English as their second language. Teesside University lecturer Jonathan Roberts said there is probably a multitude of reasons for such a lack of diversity, not least a lack of people moving into and out of the area.
