About Victoria Heckels

Dr Victoria Jane Heckels is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Forensic Psychologist, is Chartered as a psychologist with the British Psychological Society  and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is a Principal Lecturer in Forensic Psychology at Teesside University and is the Programme Director of the MSc Forensic Psychology Programme.

Victoria is accredited by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) as a Behavioural Investigative Advisor and has provided advice to over 300 major police investigations since 1993.  The advice she has provided has included interview strategies for suspects and witnesses, offender profiles and risk assessments.  Victoria is also a trained hostage negotiator.

Research interests

Victoria's areas of specialist knowledge and research interest include personality characteristics of offenders, stalking and harassment, induced and fabricated illnesses, and arson investigations.  She has worked as an Academic Psychologist since 1993 during which she has supervised over 200 undergraduate and approximately 100 postgraduate dissertation students.  Prior to this, she worked for the Kings Fund in London, where she carried out extensive work with individuals detained in the Special Hospitals; Rampton, Ashworth and Broadmoor. 

Victoria is currently module leader for The Psychology of Criminal and Sexual Offending at Level 6 on the undergraduate degree programme and is the module leader for 2modules on the MSc Forensic Psychology programme; The Psychology od Criminal Behaviour and Forensic Psychology Project module.  

Victoria graduated in November 2015 with her Doctorate in Psychology.
