Ruth served as a police officer with Cleveland Police for much of her working career.  During this time she experienced a range of operational roles, including uniformed policing in Stockton, Middlesbrough and South Bank, and was a Roads Policing Officer, and Custody Officer.

As a detective she was engaged in a number of major crime investigations, including murder and rape, and whilst attached to Special Branch, completed a 6-month secondment to a national unit based at New Scotland Yard.

During her service she was also a police trainer with responsibilities for probationer training, management training, trainer development and was an A1 NVQ Assessor.

On retirement she joined Teesside University‚Äôs Law Policing and Investigation Team and has taught and managed a number of police programmes, including the Police Foundation Degree, PCSOs, and ICIDP with Cleveland Police, the Firearms Instructors Course with the Ministry of Defence Police and Guarding Agency, and the Ports Facility Security Course with PD Ports.  She has worked with partner organisations including ISA, NECC and HM Prisons teaching initial teaching skills. She teaches on the BSc Crime and Investigation Programme, and more recently became programme leader of the MSc Criminal Investigation. 

She has had a number of journal articles published in national and international publications and has contributed a chapter to a policing textbook.
