Social Sciences, Business & Law research
Dr Anthony Lloyd is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology. He studied Criminology here at Teesside (BSc and MSc) before completing an MA in Social Research Methods at the University of York. His PhD (also at the University of York) involved a covert ethnographic study in a call centre. After completing his PhD, Anthony worked for the NHS before returning to Teesside University in 2013.
Anthony is interested in the workplace and is conducting research on the service economy. He is particularly interested in blending analysis of the workplace with emerging theoretical frameworks around 'harm' to understand experiences of low-paid, insecure and flexible forms of labour.
He is currently working on several projects including a book on service economy work and harm, a book chapter on the same topic, and an article on the demand for efficiency and productivity at work, measured through targets and performance management.
Anthony also teaches across several modules including The Sociology of Teesside 1: Sociology in Context, Identities of Work and Leisure, Media, Social Media & Society, and Contemporary Social Theory.
Anthony’s research interests are wide-ranging and include; work and employment, labour markets and the leisure and service economy, consumer culture, social harm, youth identity and transitions, political economy, debt, social theory, class cultures, and social change.
He has and continues to research the lives of young men and women engaged in low-paid service sector jobs in the North East. Anthony has published work in this area and his first book, Labour Markets and Identity on the Post-Industrial Assembly Line was published by Ashgate in 2013.
2017 - 'Ideology at Work: Reconsidering ideology, the labour process and workplace resistance' in International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy. 37(5/6).
2016 - 'Understanding the Post-Industrial Assembly Line: A Critical Appraisal of the Call Centre' in Sociology Compass. 10(4) 284-293.
2013 – Labour Markets and Identity on the Post-Industrial Assembly Line. Ashgate.
2012 – ‘Working to live, not living to work: Work, leisure and youth identity among call centre workers in North-East England’ in Current Sociology. 60(5) 619-635.
