Professor Maria Olea's research interests include:

  • heterogeneous catalysis - electrocatalysis (structure-activity relationships)
  • transient kinetic modeling
  • reactor modeling - chemical and electrochemical reactors
  • environmental catalysis - enzymatic treatment of waste waters, CO catalytic oxidation and NOx catalytic decomposition, VOCs catalytic elimination, dry reforming of CH4, biomass conversion to chemicals and fuels, recycling technologies
  • optimisation in chemical and electrochemical process.

Research interests and activities

Professor Olea's research projects include:

  • Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) studies on supported gold catalysts - art of a core project with Japan Science and Technology Corporation
  • Eliminating Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
  • Developing catalytic oxidation technologies for a better environment (GOA project at Ghent University)
  • Investigating copper and cerium surroundings in CuO-CeO2/Al2O3 catalyst by XANES and EXAFS (UGent- ESRF)
  • combining XAS with online GC catalytic studies for in situ characterisation of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) elimination over a CuO-CeO2/Al2O3 catalyst (UGent- ESRF)
  • Propane total oxidation over CuO-CeO2/Al2O3 catalyst, structural and kinetic characterisation, energy dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy coupled with mass spectrometry (UGent- ESRF)
  • Mechanistic details of Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis on Co, within IDECAT European project
  • Operando spectroscopy for oxidation catalysis, within IDECAT European project
  • Exploring the biocatalytic pathways of the microbial biosurfactant production from biodiesel industry residual glycerine - FROPTOP project
  • Development of environmentally benign sustainable chemical technologies. Better fuels, improved catalysts, and microreactors as options for pollution prevention in process development and design – PMI 2 Connect – Research Co-operation Award with Kyoto University, Japan.
  • Assessing biomass to chemicals (ABC) - Defra-Link project
