The Technology Futures Institute has a key role to play in securing the region's future as a world-leading low carbon industrial centre.

TFI is an international leader in key areas of research and innovation related to sustainable engineering, advanced processing, and measurement and control. As well as developing applications-focussed new knowledge and technologies, TFI provides a wide range of services through its strong, long-standing relationships with public and private sector organisations. This includes a number of funded projects.

IDEAS "Intelligent Neighbourhood Energy Allocation & Supervision" is an R&D project supported by the European Commission, focused on the development and operation of energy positive neighbourhoods (EPNs). In addition, IDEAS will focus on the economic and environmental benefits of doing so.

HiVEM

High-Value, high-temperature materials for Electrical Machines (HiVEM) aims to develop materials and associated manufacturing technologies to enable electrical machines, motors and generators to operate at high temperatures (around 200 to 300°C higher than current operating temperatures).

Teesside University is collaborating with Sainsbury’s on a £1 million project to find ways to cut the amount of fat used in fried food.


Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Ryder Architecture Ltd

This project aims to model and incorporate information and knowledge of building operations at the design stage to support facility management.


One Planet Middlesbrough: Creating Sustainable Solutions

Dr Tracey Crosbie from Teesside University leads the evaluation of the outcomes of the One Planet Middlesbrough project. A Big Lottery funded project which aims to create a sustainable, ‘One Planet Town’, improving quality of life and addressing social, economic and environmental challenges by engaging people in actions that promote sustainable living and behaviours.


Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Niven Architects

The project aims to develop a BIM-based lifecycle information flow that integrates Niven’s construction supply chain and provides a trade-off analysis tool to foresee and manage sustainability ratings. At the heart of this project is to develop protocols for BIM integrated design processes.
