With over 22 years of management experience in Personnel, Human Resource Management (HRM) and Human Resource Development (HRD) roles, Thomas knows about the pressures of working in the real world of business.

Before he started working at Teesside University Business School in 2009, Thomas was a highly qualified senior Human Resources Manager in a world class process manufacturing business. In this role, he was responsible for strategic plans and decisions, implementing organizational change and ensuring HRM and HRD work helped to deliver business results.

In difficult business climates, he took on more responsibilities outside the traditional HRM and HRD areas, and gained a wide perspective of all other aspects of business. He not only reported to General Managers and Managing Directors as the head of HRM and HRD, but also as a member of the strategic senior management team.

In 2009, Thomas parted ways with the process and chemical industries, and set up his own business consultancy and training firm. The firm undertook business projects and gave HRM and HRD advice to various small local organisations such as solicitors, equine support services and IT provisions.

In addition to managing his own business, Thomas began lecturing part-time at Teesside University Business School. In 2011, he took up the role full-time, lecturing and supervising students in HRM, HRD, Management and the related areas. With his experience in the chemical process industry, knowledge of starting and running a business, training and qualifications, he is able to apply his skills and knowledge for the benefit of students.

Thomas holds a first-class BA (Hons) in Public Administration (and Management), an MSc in Human Resource Management, an NVQ Level 5 in Strategic Learning and Development and the professional qualifications for HRM/D practitioners, plus other qualifications relevant to his professional career background. He is currently in the final stages of PhD research into context and organizational change, using his time spent in the chemical process industry as the basis for his thesis.

Thomas is interested in research into organisational behaviour, strategic human resource management and organisational change. His interest in the latter subject led him to become an active member of the Centre for Leadership and Organisational Change (CLOC) at Teesside University. Thomas is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (FCIPD) and also registered with the British Psychological Society (BPS) as qualified to undertake Occupational and Personality testing. In addition to this, he is a qualified NVQ work place Assessor for NVQs in Leadership, Management, Business Administration, HR/Personnel, Training, Learning and Development, Project Management and Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG).

Thomas has recently appeared on BBC Radio Tees several times as an expert in HRM and as a member of the People’s Panel. As a HRM specialist, he has been involved in discussions and phone-ins on subjects such as the default retirement age.

Thomas is an ambassador for the University, embodying its friendly and supportive nature. He strongly believes in pushing forward to develop knowledge, and will do all he can to help students achieve.
