Gender equality

Teesside University offers a range of events and activities to address gender-based under-representation, encouraging individuals to reach their potential regardless of gender.

We strive to improve gender-equality through a number of initiatives including aspiration raising activities for schools and colleges such as Hello World, Girls into Engineering; Girls into Sport; and Boys into Health and Social Care.

At Teesside we believe that individuals should be free to develop their personal abilities and make choices about their future without limitations set by stereotypes, rigid views of gender roles and prejudice.

In 2018 the University received an Athena SWAN Bronze award, which it will hold for four years in total. The Athena SWAN Charter is designed to recognise and encourage a commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) throughout higher education and research.

Teesside University Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane Turner OBE DL, is also a champion of female empowerment both in the region and nationally. Professor Turner has teamed up with Simone Roche MBE, Founder and CEO of Northern Power Women and Chris March, of Remember Media to launch a book and digital campaign to shift and lift the aspirations and ambitions of Northern girls.
