International visitor from Brazil

Teesside and Newcastle Universities are hosting a visit by Professor Marília Buzalaf, University of São Paulo, Brazil, from April 10 to 20.

Professor Buzalaf’s chair is in Biochemistry and Cariology at the Department of Biological Sciences, Bauru Dental School, University of São Paulo.

She is a senior member of the Brazilian National Research Council and recipient of the Basil Bibby Young Investigator Award for Excellence in Cariology Research from the International Association for Dental Research.

Her particular research interests include prevention of dental caries, risk factors for dental fluorosis, prevention of dental erosion/abrasion and metabolism, toxicity and biomarkers of exposure to fluoride.

To date, Professor Buzalaf’s research funding amounts to almost $2,000,000.00. She has published 200 full-length research articles, two books and 20 book chapters, and has lodged five patent requests.

Professor Buzalaf will be delivering keynote lectures here as well as at the Centre for Oral Health Research and Human Nutrition Research Centre on Fluoride metabolism. She will also be presenting a keynote seminar to the Centre for Oral Health Research at Newcastle University on Dental Erosion.

Her Teesside University lecture, Factors influencing fluoride metabolism, to which all are invited, will take place from 11am to noon on 18 April, followed by discussion from noon to 12.30pm.
