Teesside University is proud to announce the name of its iconic new building

Teesside University’s new flagship £20m building is to be called The Curve.

The Curve represents the upward, aspirational and distinctive vision of the University, and the contemporary design of the four-storey building.

Opening to students after the summer, The Curve is a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly building, with high quality architectural design and striking gold-coloured panelling. It provides 1,476 square metres of innovative teaching and learning space. It will include social learning spaces, multi-purpose areas for reception, events and exhibitions, general purpose teaching rooms and a large auditorium lecture theatre.

The Curve was a popular choice for the new building among a working group of staff, and students representatives at the University who came together to help decide on a name that accurately reflected the ambition and values of Teesside University.

The Curve is situated in the new pedestrianised area around Southfield Road which is to be called Campus Heart and features extensive landscaping, public art, lighting and projections, and a green ‘living’ wall featuring a giant digital screen.

Professor Paul Croney, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Teesside University, said: 'This is the biggest programme of development the University has seen and will completely change the look and atmosphere of the central campus.

'For the new building we wanted a name that reflects the distinctive and forward-thinking ethos of the University and which stands out in the higher education sector.

'The Curve and Campus Heart will signal an exciting new chapter in Teesside University’s illustrious history and will provide an environment for students, stakeholders and the whole community to be proud of.'

Teesside University has invested over a quarter of a billion pound in its estate in recent years as part of its commitment to provide the best possible student experience. A £6m upgrading and refurbishing of the Science & Engineering facilities in both the Orion and Stephenson buildings, the extension of the Olympia building with a new £2.5m health and fitness Centre, and a major refurbishment of Teesside Central Halls on Borough Road, are also underway for completion in 2015/16.
