Hat-trick of awards for Teesside’s striking sensation

18 December 2015

Teesside University student and Sunderland striker Beth Mead has scooped three prizes at the FA Women’s Football Awards.

Beth, 20, who has just completed her first season in the top tier won the Vauxhall England Young Player of the Year, FA Women’s Super League 1 Players’ Player of the Year and the Top Goal Scorer honours after bagging 12 goals in 14 games.

It has been a remarkable season for Beth who was also called up to the senior England squad earlier this year.

The presentation evening at Wembley Stadium celebrated the best women’s football at international and domestic level. Beth was the big winner on the night and said that the Players’ Player honour was the most rewarding.

'For your peers who you’ve played against all season to think that you were the best in the league is great, especially considering the amount of quality players in the league. It was an incredible season for myself and the club.'

Beth is in the final year of her BA (Hons) Sports Development at Teesside and is also on the University’s Elite Athlete Scheme, which provides individual support to athletes with potential to compete at international level.

She said: 'The Elite Athlete Scheme has really helped my development, my understanding of nutrition, strength and conditioning and the psychological aspect of my game.

'You get extremely well-informed advice and support and it has enabled me to improve my game and become a better athlete.'

Beth is already looking forward to next season and is aiming to improve her goal tally and make her mark at international level.

'It is an exciting time and the game is definitely heading in the right direction,” said Beth.

'It is nice for young girls to see they can be professional footballers.'
