Creative work by BA (Hons) Product Design students David Robinson, Chantelle Wilson, Declan Carter and BSc (Hons) Product Design student Lewis Brown was recognised in The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining’s annual Starpack Awards.

David and Chantelle achieved Gold, Declan was awarded Silver and Lewis received a Bronze award. The four students received their awards at a ceremony in London at the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

The Starpack Awards scheme recognises innovation in packaging design and technology. Seen as the industry’s most prestigious awards, their aim is to raise UK standards in packaging by rewarding and encouraging creativity. The awards also aim to encourage young people to get involved in careers in consumer packaging design.

Third year student David was awarded Gold for his entry The Future of Food in the Health in a Hurry category. His design was applauded by the judges for its branding and good product protection, describing it as a ‘well thought out concept’. Second year student Chantelle, 20, achieved Gold for her design for an air freshener bottle. Her design for Aroma was described by judges as a very unique, innovative concept with great appeal.

Second year student Declan, 20, won Silver for his design for an air freshener bottle. His entry, Sharpe, was described by the judges as a ‘thoughtful design, showing good research and development’. He said: 'We’re all really happy to have our work recognised in this way. It’s a real boost as we look to the future and continue our studies.'

Second year student Lewis, 21, was awarded Bronze in the Disaster Aid Emergency Packing. His design Hex-Pack was described by the judges as a ‘great concept and very well presented’ with ‘tremendous effort’ going into the design.

He said: 'The designs to meet different briefs which were submitted by all four of us shows how diverse our degree course is. Recognition such as this will really add gold dust to our CVs and it’s something for us all to be immensely proud of.'

Mark Freary, Product Design Subject Leader, said: 'It is great for the students to see their hard work and creativity recognised in this way. Starpack is an internationally renowned competition and the judges come from some of the big players in the packaging world.

'It is great for their CVs and also makes for very good portfolio pieces. This is the second year running for David too, as he won bronze for his entry in last year’s competition. They have all done extremely well and should feel very proud of what they have achieved.'
