Journalism student aims to raise awareness of pollution issue

17 November 2017

Multimedia Journalism student Izak Jackson aims to raise awareness of plastic pollution with a film which has already caught the attention of the regional media.

Izak’s bid to highlight this environmental issue led him to work with campaign group ITV Fixers to produce an eight-minute documentary to warn of the potentially damaging impact on wildlife and the region’s shoreline.

An interview with Izak and preview of his film Save Our Oceans has already featured on regional television news and he has now published the full version of his film.

The final year Teesside University BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism student said: 'The impact which plastic pollution has on the ocean is devastating, yet it is an issue which not many people seem to be talking about it.

'I am hoping this film will help to raise awareness about the problem of plastic pollution and the damage it causes.

'The plastic rings which hold together a six-pack of cans can be lethal, yet it seems such a simple thing for people to remember to take away with them if they are visiting the beach.

'It is such an easy thing for people to gather up their rubbish and dispose of it elsewhere,' he added.

Middlesbrough-born Izak, 22, who has lived in various places across the country, was drawn back the region as his grandparents still live locally - as well as being attracted by the Multimedia Journalism course facilities at Teesside University.

He said: 'The journalism courses at Teesside are highly regarded and the lecturers who teach us have industry experience, which is really beneficial for students. There are also lots of opportunities for students to complete placements and gain work experience in the industry while studying.'

Izak has set up his own film production studio Volta Media, which specialises in creating films for cultural and adventure businesses. Volta Media recently produced a short documentary series Creative Me, which focused on local artist Kingsley Chapman and Middlesbrough art gallery The House of Blah Blah.
