More about counselling services

Making use of online self-help resources:

Silver Cloud

Silver Cloud is an interactive computer based system developed by Silver Cloud Health and Teesside University Counselling Service to deliver computerised self-help therapeutic programmes.

The programmes are delivered online and aim to offer information and self-help support for students experiencing problems. There are 4 programmes on offer to students and staff of Teesside University:

  • Space from Anxiety
  • Space from Depression
  • Space from Stress
  • Space from for Positive Body Image
  • Space from Health Anxiety
  • Space from Panic
  • Space from Social Anxiety

The programmes consist of six to eight modules to be completed in your own time and at your own pace over six to eight weeks. Each module contains text, video and audio clips as well as activities and quizzes that you can complete as you go along. You can access this through the Counselling Service website.

Mindfulness

This is a taught course involving 3 hours a week. It is for anybody wanting to gain more self-awareness. It can be particularly beneficial if:

  • you want to learn to respond differently to the inevitable stresses in your life
  • you want to step out of your automatic mental reactions, which often worsen stress and interfere with effective problem-solving
  • you want to become less anxious
  • you want to lessen low mood
  • you want to become more aware of impulsive emotions as in chronic anger or self-harm.

Personal Counselling

1-2-1 Personal Counselling: You will be allocated a counsellor following the return of your form applying for counselling. Each counselling session will usually last 50 minutes and the frequency of sessions will be negotiated between you and your counsellor. The number of sessions varies from client to client and can be anything from 2 - 6 sessions. You can stop counselling at any time, but preferably having discussed it with your counsellor first.

Single-session counselling: This is a form of Brief Therapy, developed for clients who feel they only need 1-2 sessions of counselling. It is an approach which uses particular strategies to enable you to move forward with a particular issue or problem. We will ask you to think about the issue you are bringing to counselling in a particular way. With the help of some statements given to you before you start the session, we will then work towards building or creating a way forward that may work for you. The session can also be used for information gathering and guidance about self-help resources available. This combined with an Action Plan may be all that is required.

Lighten Your Load: In conjunction with the Sport and Well Being department, the counselling service offers a combined approach to the whole person. A considerable amount of research has been done on the effects of physical activity and exercise on general wellbeing, both mental and physical. This shows that on the whole, taking part in such a programme can provide a greater sense of achievement and empowerment, leading to increased self confidence and self esteem. Research also shows that it helps reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety. This option is only available following an in-depth assessment by the counsellor as to its suitability to the individual client.
