About | ERASMUS: Presenting Dr Ales Bucar

Dr Aleš Bucar Rucman will be visiting Teesside University as part of the ERASMUS scheme.

Dr Rucman is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Vice-Dean for International Cooperation at Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, University of Maribor.

His research interests includes sociology of deviance, with a focus on a broad connection between migration and crime, securitisation of international migrations, criminalisation of immigrants and media reports about crime.

His work includes close co-operation with Slovenian Migration Institute at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He conducted research on specific forms of human trafficking in Slovenia (exploitation of workers, forced criminal activities and forced begging, trafficking of children).

He is the author of two scientific monographs, and author/co-author of several other monographs, research reports and original scientific articles. His latest book, Migration and Crime: A perspective beyond stereotypes and prejudices (in Slovenian), was published by Publishing House of Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2014.

Currently his work is focused on analysing public, political and media discourse on refugee migration in Slovenia and data gathered from the participant observation in refugee and registration centres, border checks during refugee migration movement through Slovenia in 2015/2016.
