Accounting and finance – or managing money – are without doubt key business functions. This exciting, fast-moving discipline uses the latest technology and attracts the brightest and best students. If you have an analytical mind, and a methodical and measured approach to work, a career in accounting and finance is for you.
You develop practical skills highly valued by employers - such as analytical thinking, problem solving, teamworking and communication. Focusing strongly on real-world business, the course helps you understand the broader context in which accounting is practised.
What you study
Year 1 introduces you to the key concepts associated with business and accounting, and provides you with a strong foundation to continue your studies into Years 2 and 3.
In Year 2 you concentrate more closely on the study of accounting and broaden your area of knowledge in the field.
Between Year 2 and your final year, you have the option of undertaking a placement in industry or studying abroad at one of our American or European partner universities.
The final year explores more advanced topics within the area of accounting and finance, and there is a greater emphasis upon critical thinking and your ability to plan and manage your own learning as an individual and as part of a group. You also undertake a research project.
How you learn
Teaching includes the use of lectures, seminars and computer workshops. You are taught by a dedicated team of staff who have a wide range of expertise across the professional, industrial and public sectors. They develop and maintain strong links with professional bodies, such as CIMA and ACCA, and employers.
How you are assessed
Assessment methods are varied and include formal examinations, in-course work and presentations.
Work placement/study abroad year
Between Year 2 and your final year, you have the opportunity to spend a year in industry on placement, or study abroad at one of our partner institutions. Alternatively you could proceed on to the final year.
Professional accreditation
The course is designed to give you important exemptions from exams of two major accounting institutes, CIMA and ACCA, the institutes with which the majority of our graduates train. Exemptions may also be available from other chartered bodies. The programme has recently been awarded maximum exemptions by ACCA and AIA.
Career opportunities
The course is aimed primarily at students wishing to enter a finance-related career and many graduates have obtained trainee accountant positions in a variety of organisations locally, nationally and internationally. However, it also provides an excellent basis for entry into general management.
Entry requirements
A typical offer is 240 tariff points from at least two A levels (or equivalent), together with maths and English at GCSE, grade C or above (or equivalent).
